Kitchen is the gadget room?

Brits are more likely to spend money buying gadgets for their kitchen than any other room in the house, according to a new survey.

A total of 54 per cent of Brits say their kitchens contain more hi-tech appliances than any other room, helped by the rise of state of the art cookers, dishwashers, juicers, high-tech coffee makers and TV fridges.

Yet with all these time-saving devices to help us out, the average British family still spends over 24 hours a week in the kitchen.

The "Plugged in Britain" report by electrical retailer Comet shows we're keen to flaunt our kitchen status symbols - a third (31 per cent) claim they would invite friends and neighbours over to show off their new fridge freezer.

Female friendly gadgets are also on the up, with 16 per cent of women confessing they love buying new electricals just so they can be the first to own the latest technology.

And if you live in Glasgow, the chances are you're first in the queue to buy the latest line in cutting edge technology.

The report showed the Scottish city is the UK's "early adopter" capital, with the highest sales of electricals including home cinema systems, portable DVD players, wi-fi routers and plasma TVs. Next came Birmingham, London, Guildford and Torquay.

When it comes to the gadget we can't live without, the TV came top of the list with 48 per cent of Brits picking it as their must have item.

Second was the computer with 20 per cent of the vote. Third were hair ` and electrical shavers (10 per cent), followed by digital music players (five per cent) and digital cameras (three per cent).

Simon Fox, Comet Managing Director, said: "Advances in technology have had a huge impact on our domestic lives, especially in the kitchen where new gadgets mean we can whip up an espresso in an instant, watch TV on the fridge and have a great looking room all at the same time.

"However the flipside of this is even a simple toaster now comes in a variety of guises and specifications, never mind a TV or computer, so there's lots of potential for confusion.

"At Comet we're training our staff to be experts so they can help guide people through the electricals maze."
